Field Trips:
May 15th: Our final field trip was on May 15 when the second grade spent the morning in Tilden Park with Naturalist Bethany. Despite record -breaking heat that day, the second graders enjoyed all of the points of interest along our nature hike, and the cool interior display at the visitor’s center. Highlights included the long gopher snake that slithered amongst us, as we sat on the grass before our hike. Fearless Bethany scooped it up, and put it in a better place. Children saw pipe vine swallowtail butterflies in various stages of their life cycle- caterpillar, chrysalis, and full-grown adults. We were lucky to see a great horned owl’s nest at the top of a Eucalyptus tree, with baby owlets peeking out. Mrs. Bechtel kept notes, and we were able to draw our own maps using landmarks when we returned to school.http://www.ebparks.org/parks/tildenshapeimage_8_link_0

We are locating longitudes and latitudes. We will make floating compasses in Science and use real compasses to find north.
