Wishes, Lies, and Dreams is the title of a little book written by Kenneth Koch about teaching children to write poetry. The poems here represent the first of several exercises in poetry writing that the second grade has done using some of Kenneth Koch's ideas. We began each line with the words, "I wish". Children were encouraged to be as silly or as crazy as they wanted to be with their wishes and not to try to make each line rhyme. For the next exercise we wrote poems in which each line began with the words, "Sometimes in my heart...".
One student chose to use the second type of poem in this collection.
