Mission Soledad was founded on October 9th 1791, 13th in the chain, by Fermin Lasuen. Interesting fact: during Portola's land expedition to find Monterey bay, an Indian came and uttered a word that resembled "soledad", the spanish word for solitude. That's how Nuestra Senora de la Soledad got its name. "Soledad" means Our Lady of Sorrows.
