How the 3rd Grade Celebrated
El Día de los Muertos

The 3rd grade celebrated Mexico´s Día de los Muertos with three main activities. Each student created an ofrenda, an offering. This is a small altar or shrine often dedicated to a god, goddess, saint, or someone important who has passed away. Many families will create an ofrenda in their home for the festivities. In our case, each ofrenda showed someone or something that the student wished to remember and celebrate.

The students also took two exciting trips. We paid a visit to the annual Day of the Dead exhibit at the Oakland Museum of California. Local and international artists displayed their own versions of ofrendas complete with a rainbow of colors. The artwork on display served as a good inspiration for our classroom.

Finally, we attended a performance by Mexico Danza, a traditional Mexican dance company. The costumes, dances, and music were amazing! The theatre, located in downtown Oakland, was full of students who were celebrating the festival. By clicking on student names below, you can view each ofrenda and learn firsthand their impressions of the class trips.
