HANUMAN

BY: JOHANNA

Hanuman is the monkey god, the son of the wind. Hanuman's name means "Broken jaw". People in India say that he will stay on earth as the name of lord Rama is remembered. He becomes lost in the name of Rama. He forgets himself completely. Hanuman is capable of doing anything. People in China call him "Shun Wu Kong" (The Wind Monkey.)

Hanuman will do anything to serve Lord Rama. Hanuman has helped Rama more than once. And in all of those times he has never given up. Since he is able to help people and animals he is also known as Sankatamochana, or "The Remover of Distress

In Japan many cities are named after him. There is one monkey called the Hanuman monkey. It is one of the most common monkeys in India. His father is Vay, God of the wind, and his mother is Punjikasthala, a goddess who appeared on earth in the Vanaras community. The Vanaras were a very smart race of monkey - like beings whose home was the forest outside Rama's city, Ayodhya.

Hanuman has been known to sing songs of lord Rama daily. Rama, his brother Laxshmana, and the monkey army went to fight Kumba Karna, Ravana's brother. Hanuman went to get the mountain of healing herbs for all of the wounded warriors. Even though he was hurt himself, he still pushed himself to get up and go get that mountain. He pushed and pushed so hard that he finally did it.

He is known to be very strong, invincible and very, very intelligent. Many different people in many different places call him many different names like: Maruti (Like the Wind), Pavanasuta (Lord of the Wind or Son of the Air), Mabavira (Great Warrior), Ram Dass (servant of Lord Ram). Did you know that Hanuman means "Broken Jaw"? Another name for him is Mahavera (the Great Hero). Hanuman can be big or he can be small. He can change whenever he wants. Cool, huh!

At one point he became a very small mongoose to find out where Ravana had hidden the Lord Rama's wife, Sita. Hanuman is able to lift up mountains. At another point he set fire to the golden city of Lanka. What gave him the idea was that Ravana had set his tail on fire. It was good thinking how he got Ravana back. I bet his tail hurt, though. When Hanuman was little he always wanted to be a hero. I guess he got what he wanted.
