Medieval Music and Dance

I did a report on music and dance in the Middle Ages. Then, music was divided into two groups, Secular and Religious. Dance was considered the work of Satan, by ultra-conservative Christians. (Some Christians tolerated it). I won't bore you with all the details. Here are the basics.

Religious Music

  • Used in churches to worship God.
  • Songs made up of monotone chants
  • No harmony, No instrumentation
  • Song topics about religious happenings such as the nativity

    Secular Music

  • Songs had melody
  • Songs had instrumentation
  • Song topics include protest, love, holidays, and everyday life
  • Used as an art rather than a tradition
  • Not as popular as religious music
  • Dance

  • Discouraged by church, because they considered moving the body to be one of the seven deadly sins: pride
  • Done at parties only
  • Some Christians tolerated it, and participated in it
  • Done in groups
  • With drums and occasionally guitar in the backround
  • Eventually the Church accepted it and used it in their sermons
  • Theater

  • Discouraged by church, because it was stealing their attention
  • Done by traveling rebels, who did magic tricks and such
  • Theater was at its worst in the middle ages
  • Dance was used in skits
  • Skits were sometimes about biblical events
  • By Eli
