The castle was taken under the leadership of Charles IV. He turned the castle from it's original style to a more gothic style. During the reign of Wenceslas IV, Charles' son, building continued. Also during his rule John Huss (who was a Bohemian religious reformer and taught against the word of the Protestant church) was burned at the stake. This led to a war avenging his death called the Hussites War. In the end those loyal to the church won against the 450 Bohemian radicals. By the end of the war the castle was uninhabited because of the damaged castle walls.
Later on, in 1483 under the reign of Vladislav Jagellonsky, the palace was remodeled again. He is known for his extensive throne room. In it there were huge vaults with fancy intertwining ribs. This started the dynasty of the Jagellons.
St. Vitus Cathedral
St. Vitus Cathedral was built inside the castle. Ever since the 11th century the cathedral was used as the main castle church. The relics of the patrons of the saints, (SS. Vitus, Wenceslas and Adalbert) were kept inside the Cathedral. St. Vitus Cathedral was named after a wealthy 4th century martyr. It was originally constructed in 926 AD. The basilica of the cathedral was built on the original rotunda. However, the crucial part of the cathedrals gothic constructions happened under the direction Mathias of arras and Peter Parler of Gmued. Later on, in the 18th and 19th centuries additions were made in neo-gothic style. Now the castle and cathedral are still in good condition. They have become a big tourist attraction in Prague. Every hour there is a changing of the guard. In the castle an art gallery has been added. In there are several paintings. The roots of these paintings reach back to the 16th century.
