| Bodiam Castle was built by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge to protect Rye and Winchelsea ports from the French. It is on the Rother River, which is connected to a channel in Rye. It was only attacked twice. It was charged first in 1484 and was overtaken by Richard III. It was attacked a second time by Sir William Waller and the Roundheads, who destroyed part of it. During the Civil War Bodiam was owned by John Hufton. It was then bought by Sir Nathaniel Powel in 1644. Then in 1815 Bodiam was being torn down by Hastings Builders, but John "Mad Jack" Fuller bought it for 3,000 pounds from them and began to repair it. And Lord Cuzon finished the repair in 1917. Lord Cuzon died in 1925, and Bodiam Castle was left to the National Trust. | |
