Monasteries Through The Ages
By Michael
My report is on monasteries. One of the things that I found to be funny about Monasteries is that even though the people went to them to escape the stereotype of living they often fell into that stereotype. For example Men went out and did all the labor while women stayed inside and cooked or prayed. One of the problems with monasteries was that they tried to stay poor but people kept on giving them valuable gifts so that they would pray for them while they were in purgatory. If the monasteries refused the gifts they would be thought of as stuck up rich people. In case you were wondering purgatory is the idea of a place between heaven and hell were you served a time then went up to heaven. It was believed that you could lessen your stay by having religious people pray for you. If you don't know what heaven and hell are *g* just ask anybody.
Monasteries often had to provide beds and food for armies that the king sent out their way. The monasteries didn't like to be put in a political possession so the let them stay. The Monasteries thought of the warriors as unholy men who have been sent to them by the devil!
