Fountains Abbey

Fountains Abbey by Olivia

Fountains Abbey was built and founded by 13 monks that were removed from a riot at St. Mary's Abbey. They were left in a 70 acre field called Skell Valley, which was a valley placed next to a little river called Skell River. This was a very beautiful site when the monks first arrived, full of space, and beautiful views. This field was also complete with an adequate supply of water, and tons of fallen wood and stone. The monks found this as an opportunity, and decided to construct an abbey that would be complete with kitchen and latrines that would contain running water; this abbey was one of the only major buildings of that time that had running water. This abbey would also have a stricter rule than that of the Benedictines, this rule would be called the Cistercian way.

Underneath the abbey, the monks placed four parallel tunnels containing running water and its source was Skell River. This water flowed to some of the most major buildings in Yorkshire and Ripon.

The monks had assistance in founding the abbey, although this assistant remained unamed. When their abbey was complete, the monks decided to give it a name, and since this abbey was built alongside the small river of Skell with tiny fountains sprouting from the rocks, they thought it only necessary to call this new building Fountains Abbey.

In the construction of my model, I used foam core. For the base I used water color and oil paints. It took me about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks to build my model with the help of my dad. The hardest part was cutting out the windows and gluing the model to the base perfectly. The easiest part was painting the base. Overall, I enjoyed constructing and learning about this abbey.
