Wells Cathedral
History of Wells Cathedral
The word cathedral comes from the word "cathedra" which is Latin for the "throne of the bishop". Wells Cathedral was started in 1183 and was finished in 1260 with the nave, the north porch and the west front. From this point of view, the west front is typical. It unfolds impressivly, punctuated by buttresses. The West front of Wells Cathedral has over 300 sculptures.
Where it was Built and Why
The Cathedral was built in Somerset, England and was built there because King Ine, who was king at the time, thought that the stream running through Somerset had great powers and that God had told him to build it there.
What is it used for today
The Cathedral is still used today as a church, and is a very popular place for tourists.
