The Siena Duomo

For the 7th grade history project, I decided to make the Duomo in Siena, Italy, a Medieval town made almost entirely of brick. The reason I chose to make this particular cathedral is that I saw it on a vacation in Europe and was amazed by it, especially by its complex facade. The cathedral's most striking feature, though, is the design of bold "zebra stripes" running up and down it.
To help me make everything more on scale, I blew up a floor plan of the Duomo and built my model on top of it. I made the model mostly out of foam core because it's a fairly easy material to use. I drew the stripes on it in black pen and used tooth picks for pillars.
The most difficult part in building my model was making the Duomo, or Dome, itself. I expect that this proved even more difficult in Medieval times because it was on a much larger scale. I used wire mesh, covered it with orange construction paper, and used tooth pick pillars to support it.
Medieval villagers built their cathedral almost entirely by themselves. This shows both a dedication to their religion and contempt towards Florence, who they had fought several wars with. The building of the cathedral was partly because they needed a place to pray, but also it was essentially a competition between Siena and Florence and they wanted the finer church.
The project was pretty fun, in general, but difficult and time-consuming. I think it wouldn't have taken as long if I had planned it out better in the beginning.
